Huxtable takes Sgt. Schultz approach to critical bill

July 16, 2024

Fellow Delawareans can breathe easier now that the First State has an official state cocktail. Thank goodness Sen. Russ Huxtable was there to sponsor the bill that made orange crush Delaware’s go-to adult beverage.

It’s unfortunate the senator was not around to vote on Senate Bill 92, which imposed egregious costs on the towns and citizens he represents. Despite appeals by each of the towns in Huxtable’s district, it was a “Where’s Waldo” moment where the senator was missing in action representing his constituents.

SB 92 lowered the threshold for the number of employees required to form a union, causing the towns he represents to employ multiple attorneys to assist in navigating the legal ramifications of the bill. The costs for these attorneys will result in increased taxes to pay for these unbudgeted expenses. Instead of supporting the towns, Russ capitulated to pressure from the unions by doing nothing. He somehow believes that his failure to vote insulates him from having to answer for a vote. It’s a Sgt. Schultz tactic – “I know nothing!”

If one compares these two examples of Huxtable’s service, sponsorship of a bill for a meaningless state cocktail and SB 92, which has real-life consequences for his constituents, it reinforces the notion that he is unserious. Dewey, Rehoboth, Lewes, Milton and the surrounding communities deserve a dedicated and serious senator. Russ Huxtable is not that. Kim Hoey Stevenson will be that person and deserves your vote.
