Innovative procedure makes Lewes man a grateful Beebe patient

About five years ago, I relocated from northern Virginia to Lewes. After retiring from a 35-year career in computer product sales with federal agencies, I was looking forward to life at the beach and, for the most part, it’s been everything I’d hoped for. 

I have been on blood thinners for the past two years, after having been diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. When I began having some health concerns, my neurologist explained that my problems were due to my extended use of blood thinners. We discussed several solutions and he suggested that the Watchman procedure was my best option.

The Watchman is a one-time, minimally invasive implant procedure for people like me with non-valvular AFib who need an alternative to blood thinners. My neurologist referred me to Dr. Mouhanad Freih, a board-certified interventional cardiologist who is a member of Beebe Healthcare’s Medical Staff.

When I met with Dr. Freih in his office, he was great. He was very thorough, and he answered all my questions.

My surgery was scheduled for March 10, and I arrived at Beebe’s Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus feeling fine but pensive.

My prep for surgery was professional and uneventful, and when I woke from surgery two hours later, I felt groggy, but fine. I was taken to my room for overnight observation, where nurses Cynthia (Cindi) Dieterle and Marcelle Brady took exceptional care of me. 

I was discharged from the hospital the next day and no longer need to be on blood thinners. Today, I’m feeling great. This surgery was my first experience with Beebe, and I am grateful for the exceptional care that I received. I am grateful for Dr. Freih and for my new implant. I am grateful for the nurses and everyone who participated in my care. I am a new Beebe patient and a grateful one indeed.
