Isaacs School at Redden Crossroads in 1936

June 1, 2016

Last Friday’s Cape Gazette included a column about a historic marker honoring the accomplishments of agribusinessman and entrepreneur John Sudler Isaacs.  This photo shows students in the one-room Isaacs School in the middle of Sussex County, north of Georgetown, at Redden Crossroads, in 1936.

Students from first grade until they left to go to work learned together in these schools. John Sudler Isaacs attended a school like this near Greenwood. By the time he had completed six grades, he had enough readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmetic to go into business and eventually acquire 8,000 acres of farmland to grow commercial crops of vegetables  and feed flocks of chickens.
