James Auld Anderson Jr., lifelong educator

July 12, 2023

James Auld Anderson Jr., 74, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was born Feb. 7, 1949, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late James A. Sr. and Lois (Bixby) Anderson.

James grew up in Kenmore, N.Y., and was a former longtime resident of Takoma Park, Md., and Walterboro, S.C. He was currently residing in Angola by the Bay in Lewes and Amherst, Nova Scotia. James graduated from Kenmore West Senior High School in New York. He continued his education at Rutgers University in New Jersey, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1976, and ultimately his master's degree in 1982 from the University of South Carolina.

James enjoyed a lifelong career in education, working for several schools throughout his career and holding multiple positions in South Carolina and Maryland, including teacher, coach, and principal. After moving to Maryland, he resumed his career in Prince George's County Public Schools. After retiring from teaching, James worked as chief financial officer for the Law Office of Adele L. Abrams PC.

James loved boating, golfing, traveling, reading history, rooting for the Nationals and attending musical concerts. He was a friend of Bill W. for nearly 30 years. James brought history to life for his students and his passion for educating future generations never waned. He truly enjoyed time spent with his friends and family, and his presence will be deeply missed.

James is survived by his wife, Adele L. Abrams; his children, Jeffrey M. Anderson, Elspeth Anderson Dyal and Meagan Anderson Marvin; his six grandchildren, all of South Carolina; his sister, Holly A. Conners; his niece, Sharon Conners; his nephew, Patrick Conners; and his two beloved dogs, Pinkie and Kingston (Little Bits).

A memorial is being planned in Maryland for Aug. 5, with a Zoom option and details to come.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in James's memory to Washington Area Intergroup Association, aa-dc.org/contribute-online.
