James Bazzoli, enjoyed traveling

August 22, 2023

James Bazzoli, 92, of Lewes passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at The Moorings. He was born Sept. 10, 1930, in the Winterthur area of Wilmington to the late Lucian and Lily (Larsen) Bazzoli. Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances K. Bazzoli, who passed away June 13, 2020, at The Moorings.

Jim earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Delaware followed by a master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed by the Ferris School and then as a community organizer in the inner city of Wilmington. Jim was then asked to be the executive director of Geriatric Services in Delaware.

Jim was a skilled amateur horticulturist. As a member of the Delaware Avenue Community Association, Jim headed the tree committee and oversaw the planting of 100 new street trees in the community. For that work, Jim was named Wilmington's volunteer of the year in 1994.

Following their retirement to their Millville home near Ocean View, Jim and Frances became members of the Sussex Bird Club, the Delaware Orchid Society and the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, where Jim helped maintain a walkway and build bird observation platforms. Jim also had an avid interest in lighthouses and volunteered with the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation. Over the years, Jim and Frances enjoyed many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Colombia, Canada, Costa Rica and Egypt.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contribution to the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation, PO Box 708, Lewes, DE 19958.

Services will be private.
