James E. Gibson, beloved professor
James E. Gibson, PhD, 73, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2021 at his home in Rehoboth Beach. He was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Lewistown, Pa., son of the late Rev. Robert E. Gibson and Edna L. Buchanan.
Dr. Gibson was passionate about higher education, receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s from Boston University, both in philosophy. He then earned his doctorate in religion studies from Temple University, paving the way for a lifelong career in higher education. He was an esteemed member of the faculty and a beloved professor of philosophy and religion at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service.
Jim was funny, charming, articulate and very, very smart. An avid reader, he adored teaching and was happiest when engaged in stimulating conversation and debate. In retirement, he was active in area discussion groups including the Socrates Café and Food for Thought. Most of all, Jim cherished time spent with Deborah and others he held dear. He was a loving and devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Gibson was preceded in death by his sister, Suzanne (Gibson) Cuff. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Deborah A. Rouse of Rehoboth Beach; his sister, Nancy Peraino of Downers Grove, Ill.; together with a flock of nieces and nephews, whom he adored. He is also survived by his loyal canine companions, Bhakti and Titus.
The family would like to express its gratitude to Tammy Mumford and her team for their devoted, gentle assistance during Jim’s illness.
Services are private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
