Jimmy’s Grille opens in Dewey Beach

June 2, 2009
The famous chicken of Bridgeville has come to the beach. Jimmy’s Grille, a 20-year fixture in the western Sussex town, now has a sister location on Bellevue Street in Dewey Beach.

Memorial Day weekenders filled the open-air pavilion restaurant for its Friday, May 22 grand opening, enjoying free food and listening to an acoustic set by Love Seed Mama Jump’s Pete & Rick. Highway One LLC principal owner Alex Pires patrolled his new restaurant wearing a straw hat and drinking a Bud Light, working the crowd.

Pires said Jimmy’s Dewey location would be successful for the same reasons the Bridgeville location has become such a local staple: good food.

“It’s comfort food. It’s like your mother’s food,” Pires said. “It’s what your mother made for you.”

Pires said Jimmy’s has won numerous awards for its barbeque chicken, making it known throughout the state – in fact, Pires said, Jimmy’s is the largest caterer in Delaware. He said the Dewey location won’t provide catering just yet.

Jimmy’s will feature music every weekend similar to the breezy, relaxed set provided by Pete & Rick. Pires said the music wouldn’t continue long into the evening, out of respect for the neighbors. In the event of foul weather, plastic windows can be unfurled to enclose the pavilion.

Jimmy’s is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Pires predicts success for the restaurant’s new home in Dewey.

The restaurant offers the same menu and the same recipe that has made the Bridgeville eatery famous, and the laid-back atmosphere is a perfect fit for the beach.

“Why not?” said Pires.
