September 1, 2023

Joey Andrisani won the Outlet Liquors 5K in Dewey Beach Aug. 26 on the morning of his wedding, which was scheduled for St. Edmond Church in Rehoboth Beach later in the day.

Father William Cocco was scheduled to officiate the ceremony. Andrisani was marrying Meghan Conaty of the well-known extended Wilmington family. It was all quintessential Delaware, as fans at the finish line talked about the people they know who know the Andrisanis and Conatys.

Andrisani, 40, won the race in 17:16, outpacing masters winner Kyle Brighthill, 48, who ran 17:49. Brighthill has been the boyfriend of top runner Alise Reynolds for the last 10 years, which seemed relevant in a foot race that ended at the altar.

Sarah Crimian, 34, of Middletown was the overall women’s winner in 20:40. Kate Kober, 40, of Hoboken, N.J., won the women’s masters race in 21:33.

There were 93 total finishers in the race, broken down into 53 men and 40 women.

A competitive race took place in the male 9-and-under division, as Edvald Slettvag, 6, ran 30:46 to edge Jacob Washco, 7, who ran 31:49.

Sean Norris, 32, of Lewes was third overall finisher in 19:10. Matty Klein, 40, of Claymont, was fourth overall in 19:40.

The 55-59 male age group was competitive, with Matt Smith in 20:52, Tim Foster in 22:32 and Matt Garvey in 28:55.

The Rubberband Man Rick Poppleton, 70, snapped to win his age group in 22:14.

The 9-and-under girls’ race was won by Ruby Leps, 9, in a time of 26:48. Sonia Slettvag, 8, was second in 31:53.

The next Races2Run event at the beach is the 11th annual Summer’s End 5K at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 3, at Northbeach restaurant.
