John David Matthews Sr., enjoyed nature, cooking

John David Matthews Sr., 67, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at Beebe Healthcare. He was born Jan. 4, 1955, in Boston, Mass., to Phoebe Ann (Hardwick) Matthews and John Belfield Matthews Jr.    

John attended high school at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston, and upon graduation attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 1979, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business with a major in accounting. John met the love of his life, Jeanne Casimir, in 1983, and six months later they were married. They spent a blissful 38 years together prior to his death. Their son, John David Matthews Jr. “Davy” was born in 1987. John worked in business and accounting and continued with postgraduate courses until his retirement. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as finance and operations manager for the Archdiocese of Boston. John enjoyed listening to jazz and playing his bass guitar. He was an inquisitive man, an avid reader and a great conversationalist. He took a special interest in nature, tending flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and keeping honey bees. John deeply loved his dogs and was never without a canine companion through the years. He loved to cook and was patient and creative in preparing delicious meals for his family.

Most recently, John and Jeanne relocated from Massachusetts to Delaware in order to be closer to their son and newly arrived granddaughter. John loved being “Grampie” to baby Eva and enjoyed watching her grow. 

John was predeceased by his father John Belfield Matthews Jr. and his brother Mark Matthews. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanne Casimir-Matthews; his mother, Phoebe Matthews; his son, John David Matthews Jr., his daughter-in-law, Sarah Matthews, and granddaughter Eva; his sister, Lauren Matthews; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John will also be sorely missed by his beloved dogs, Teegan and Tara. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton. A viewing will be held at 1 p.m.
