John Edward Young, health, substance abuse counselor

John Edward Young passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family Monday, July 8, 2024, in Dover. He was born May 19, 1942, in Winston-Salem, N.C., beloved son of the late Raymond Hood and Hester Young.

John dedicated his career to serving others as a mental health and substance abuse counselor for the federal government. His compassion and dedication to his work touched many lives and made a significant impact in the community.

He enjoyed going to movies and hanging out with the Buffalo Soldiers of Delaware. He also enjoyed going out with his family and seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved talking to his brother, Rodger, every day, at least two to three times daily.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Hood and Hester Young. John is survived by his daughter, Mara Burt of Dover; his son, Darrin Young of Glassboro, N.J., along with their mother, Betty Lewis and family of Clayton, N.J. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Teana Daniels and family of Philadelphia, Pa., and Alicia Young and family of Camden, N.J.; his grandson, Daniel Carr and family of Vineland, N.J.; his son-in-law, Joseph Press of Philadelphia, Pa.; his three brothers, Terry Thompson of North Carolina, and Rodger Conquest and Mark Conquest, both of Delaware; the Jeff Matthews family of Delaware; the Andrew McNeil family of Sicklerville, N.J.; and the Tyrone Davis family of Lindenwold, N.J. John is also remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro. Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of kindness and service will be remembered and cherished.
