John Henry Richardson Sr., enjoyed his family

August 19, 2020

John Henry Richardson Sr., 80, of Wilmington, born Jan. 16, 1940, departed his earthly home Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2020, while a patient at Christiana Hospital.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Charles and Hester Richardson; he has one surviving brother.  Because of his mother’s untimely death when he was just months old, John Henry was raised and cared for by his aunt, Annie Spruance in Wilmington.

John Henry received his education in various schools in Wilmington.  His employment history was with Allied Leather Goods for many years and over 20 years at Howard High School in the custodial department.  He was the loving and caring father of two sons, John Jr. and Marcus Richardson.  He enjoyed card games and the Philadelphia Eagles and other sports, always wanting the underdogs to win, but nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family.  In his later years, he grew to love Chinese food, particularly sesame chicken and chicken fried rice.

Besides his parents, preceding him in death were three brothers, Herbert Richardson, Charlie Richardson and Leovetar Richardson; and his three sisters, Flossie Little, Elizabeth Williams and Hester Ann Scott.

John Henry is survived by his sons, John Jr. and Marcus Richardson of Wilmington; a brother, William Richardson of Smyrna; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Richardson of Ohio; a close nephew, Morris White of Wilmington; and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

A service will be held Friday, Aug. 21, at noon, with a viewing one hour prior at McPherson Funeral Service Inc. in Camden.
