John A. Hopkins Jr., owned Hopkins Granary Inc.
John A. Hopkins Jr., 75, of Harbeson, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, April 20, 2023.
John was born in Lewes, son of the late John A. Sr. and Elizabeth “Lib” (Calhoun) Hopkins. He was born into a farming family, and he continued those family traditions throughout his life. Along with his family, John was owner and operator of Hopkins Granary Inc. in Milton. The granary operated for 55 years, at which time John retired in May 2003.
John served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Dover Air Force Base. He loved to travel and was an avid camper. He enjoyed mining for gold, coin collecting and black powder target shooting.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife Laura (Joseph) Hopkins; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Richard B. Crabb.
He is survived by his son, John A. Hopkins III and wife Dawn; a daughter, Donna Hopkins Gooner; a sister, Patricia H. Crabb; four grandchildren, Justin Hopkins (Alison), Izaak Hopkins, RJ Gooner and Skye Gooner; and four great-granddaughters; as well as extended family and many friends in the farming community.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, April 28, at Short Funeral Services chapel, 416 Federal St., Milton. A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., with burial to immediately follow at Coolspring Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Harbeson.
