Judith S. Carrington Holt, loved the beach

April 28, 2023

Judith S. Carrington Holt, 76, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023. Judy was the wife of James “Jim” Holt and mother to two children. To many, she was known as Aunt Judy, a beloved friend, aunt, mother, caregiver, and supporter.

Judy was born in Carbondale, Pa., to Marion and Howard Spangenberg in 1947. She was one of four children. The house she lived in was built by her father off Seese Hill Road in Canadensis, where she spent her childhood. Judy loved school, but her family could not afford to let her go to college. The women of the Canadensis United Methodist Church raised money and sent her to Hiwassee College in Tennessee for two years. She then transferred to Emory and Henry College in Virginia to finish her schooling. She originally was studying to be a missionary. Later, she decided to study biology. At Emory and Henry College, Judy met her husband, Jim Holt. They reconnected in 1986 and were married two years later Aug. 20, 1988.

Judy moved to New York City to work for Chemical Bank. She was an extremely hard worker and eventually become a successful vice president in Middle Market Banking at JP Morgan Chase. She worked for the bank for 33 years. She loved New York. In 1991, Jim and Judy purchased a house in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., to raise their two children. They adopted Matthew in 1993 and Madeline in 2000. Judy loved traveling and the beach. She would frequent many places with sun and sand with her close friends, family, and husband. Jim and Judy found Lewes in 1991 and had vacationed in that area ever since. They bought their retirement house in 2003 on the beach and decided this is where they would grow old together.

Judy will be remembered and celebrated as one of the most caring, loving and understanding individuals that God gifted us. She cared for her family and those around her, always seeing the best in people. Judy was a caring friend who cherished the memories she made with her girlfriends throughout her life. She was a loving sister to her siblings and extended that to her in-laws, supporting them in whatever way she could. She was a loving mother, supporting her children in their passions and pushing them to do their very best. Finally, she was a loving wife to her husband Jim, her perfect match, whom she could not live without.

Judy is survived by her husband, James Holt; her two children, Matthew Holt and Madeline Holt; and her brother, Timothy Spangenberg; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A viewing will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 1, at Canadensis United Methodist Church in Canadensis, Pa., followed by a service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mert Shane officiating. Burial will follow at Seese Hill Cemetery in Canadensis. After the burial, all are invited back to the church for a reception.
