Karen Sophie Jacoby, enjoyed beach life
Karen Sophie Jacoby passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, after a brief illness. Karen was born Feb. 12, 1947, to Fira (Kahan) and Gregory Jacoby in Manhattan, N.Y. She lived there until the early 1960s, when her family moved to Washington, D.C.
Karen attended the University of Pittsburgh with dual majors in history and English, receiving her undergraduate degree in 1968. She attended the American University Graduate School of International Studies in Washington, D.C., for her master’s work in Russian area studies.
In the early years of her career, Karen worked as a staff assistant at the National Association of Air Traffic Specialists and an accreditation specialist at the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools. From 1978-2004, Karen served as director of professional development for the National Court Reporters Association in Vienna, Va., where she led NCRA’s largest department, responsible for national continuing education, testing, certification, scholarships and accreditation programs.
Her professional affiliations included the American Society of Association Executives, Greater Washington Society of Association Executives, International Association for Continuing Education and Training and National Association for Court Management.
Karen retired in 2004 to enjoy life at her beach home in Dewey Beach. She was a beacon of light to which all were drawn, collecting friends and colleagues throughout her life. She was loved and adored by her family and close friends, and admired and respected by her professional contacts, many of whom became close friends.
Karen is survived by a brother, cousins, and many, many dear and close friends who feel an irreparable void. Private gatherings will be held in Rehoboth Beach and in the D.C. area. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
