Kathy McGuiness for 14th District representative

August 25, 2024

I have known Kathy McGuiness for many years, and I can’t think of anyone more qualified to replace Pete Schwartzkopf in the 14th District. Pete has served the district well, and Kathy will continue to do the same. Now let’s be clear, despite Claire Snyder-Hall’s thinly veiled and unethical ads, apparently trying to get people to believe Pete endorsed her: He has made it very clear who he believes should succeed him in Dover. Pete has spoken often and clearly; he endorses Kathy McGuiness.

This is an important race for the people of Sussex County. There are many reasons why we need a strong advocate in Dover. There is a shortage of healthcare workers in Sussex County. There are traffic problems on Route 1 that DelDOT must solve. There are problems with the school system that need addressing, and many others. All these issues need someone like Kathy, who is familiar with all parts of Delaware government, and has the knowledge and experience to make a real difference for the people of Sussex County. Southern Delaware is also a major tourist destination. We need someone familiar with the issues that tourists bring. We want to continue to be that destination, but at the same time, we need a good balance between full-time residents and tourists. Kathy’s longtime service on the Rehoboth Beach commission gives her an in-depth knowledge of all those issues.

Now there are three people running in the Sept. 10 Democratic primary. I have mentioned one already, but also running is Marty Rendon. He is a great, very smart guy whom I have known for many years. But as I told him, and I have written often, I think it is time to let a younger generation run for office and represent us. I don’t think people over 70 should be running for office for the first time. I know I will be accused of ageism. But then, I myself am over 70. It is not that I don’t think we have the mental acuity to serve; we do. It is when we are trying to get young people to vote and participate in our democracy, we shouldn’t be asking them to vote for people who could be their grandparents, or in some cases, their great-grandparents. It is time to let the next generations serve.

The residents of the 14th District have an amazing candidate to vote for. I urge all the voters in the district to cast their ballots in the Sept. 10 Democratic primary for Kathy McGuiness. She will make us all proud.
