Kenneth Lee Cannon, excellent mechanic

January 31, 2020

Kenneth Lee Cannon, 65, son of the late John Amos Cannon and Kathryn Smith Cannon, was born June 8, 1954. He departed this life at home in Rehoboth Beach.

Kenneth, affectionately known as “Kenny,” received his education in the Cape Henlopen School District. He enjoyed participating in track and field.

Kenny was a hardworking man. Some of his first jobs included the state park, bean factory and bulk heading. He was employed by the City of Rehoboth Beach from 1975 until he retired in 2018 as a mechanic. He started a small business in 1993 and also worked for Coldwell Banker from 1995 until his passing.

Kenny was a well-known mechanic and worked on lots of cars. One of the first cars he purchased was a GTO. Kenny was the kind of mechanic if you called him to say you had car troubles he would tell you to bring it on down and he would take a look at it. And if he could not fix it he would tell you who could and where to take it. He had that special kind of hospitality. Kenny was full of life and a bunch of laughs. He loved to pull out his bag of jokes.

He also enjoyed fishing, playing spades, horseshoes, softball, dominos, drag racing in Delmar, riding his motorcycle with the guys, going to the casino, spending time with his family and friends, and having a nice cold one.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Smith Sr., two sisters, Ida White and Geraldine M Pettyjohn; and three nephews, Michael Cannon, Keith A. Cannon Jr. and Gregory Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Kenneth (Lashawnda) Piper of Smyrna; one daughter, Stacey Piper of Lincoln; one brother Keith Cannon of Rehoboth Beach; six grandchildren Christain, Leya, Savannah, Zaniyha, Jordyn and Kayln; one niece, three nephews, 11 great-nieces and -nephews; a special friend, Shirley Piper; and a host of cousins and friends.

A homegoing service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, with visitation at 11 a.m. and service at 1 p.m., at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Interment will be in Old Hickory Cemetery. Services entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service Inc., Camden.
