Kyle Evans Gay is right for lieutenant governor

August 27, 2024

As a lifelong Sussex County resident, I think that far too often, the needs of our communities have been overlooked. This is why I am proud to be a voice for Sussex County and all Delawareans while serving as state treasurer. It is also the reason I support policymakers who can bring different voices to the table and truly consider the needs of Sussex County residents in policy decisions.

That is why I endorsed lieutenant governor candidate Kyle Evans Gay, for her robust policy record and devoted career serving all of our communities here in Delaware. Even as state senator representing the 5th Senate District in New Castle County, she consistently uplifts the needs of both Kent and Sussex counties. As a fierce advocate for early childhood education, Kyle hosted an early childhood town hall series, meeting with parents, providers and elected officials in all three counties. She also introduced legislation to establish a statewide purchase of care rate to all child care providers to align with the New Castle County rate.

For years, Kent and Sussex counties’ purchase of care rate has been significantly lower than New Castle County’s rate. This led to childcare providers in Kent and Sussex counties struggling to serve many families in need. She was thrilled to see Gov. Carney’s administration adopt this proposed policy establishing the statewide rate, increasing access to early childhood education statewide. Kyle believes that access to high-quality early education, affordable housing and healthcare should not depend on one’s ZIP code, and she will continue to fight for policies that address geographic inequities.

Not only does she have a record of putting forth policies for Sussex County, she also has the experience that ensures she will be ready to serve as Delaware’s lieutenant governor on day one. One of the core roles of the lieutenant governor is to preside over the Delaware Senate. Serving in the Senate since 2020, her established relationships and in-depth procedural understanding will carry her well.

Another crucial responsibility of the lieutenant governor is serving as chair of the Board of Pardons. As a member of the Board of Pardons, I know Kyle’s career as an attorney will bring a valuable perspective to the role. As chair, she will be able to use her courtroom experience to adeptly balance the voice of the victim and the need for justice. Kyle’s strengths are her compassion and ability to lean into collaboration in developing community-based solutions that will help Delaware’s working families thrive. That is why she has also been endorsed by the Delaware Democratic Party, the Delaware State Education Association, Delaware Stonewall PAC, Delaware Building Trades, the Delaware AFL/CIO, the Brady PAC, and several Delaware elected officials.

Kyle Evans Gay will fight for all of us as lieutenant governor, and I wholeheartedly believe she is the right choice for Sussex County and for Delaware.
