Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K set Oct. 19 at Hopkins Creamery

October 9, 2024

Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation’s 4th annual Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K Run/Walk is set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, at Hopkins Farm Creamery, 18186 Dairy Farm Road, Lewes. Registration opens at 8 a.m.

The event raises funds to support the foundation’s mission to build awareness about Delaware’s agricultural industry and promote the benefits of fresh, local food. It highlights local agriculture as participants follow the course around a local dairy farm.

“The foundation’s commitment to increasing agricultural education is so important for the agricultural industry. The younger generation is filled with future farmers, industry professionals and consumers. A simple agricultural activity when they are young could lead to a life dedication to agriculture,” said Alexis Langenfelder, DEFB ag literacy and program coordinator. Whether it’s planting seeds, making ice cream, or engaging in other hands-on lessons, children love learning how their food makes its way to their plates.

Hopkins Farm Creamery is a popular, family-friendly location situated in the heart of Green Acres Farm, a fourth-generation farming venture located at the intersection of Dairy Farm Road and Route 9 west of Lewes.

The creamery operation opened in 2008, and it has been creating new ice cream flavors and selling them to the public ever since. Starting and finishing at this popular spot, the off-road farm course for the 5K race will take runners and walkers into the farm pastures, past hay bales and a barn, through a covered bridge and around a pond.
