The Sussex Tech softball team scored three runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and garner a 6-3 victory over the Lady Vikings at Cape’s athletic complex April 15. Cape moves to 4-3, while the Ravens are now 6-1.
The Vikings outhit the Ravens 10-4. Cape pitcher Marissa Frederick struck out 10 batters while walking four and gave up just four hits. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate.
“This game was a good test for us,” said Cape head coach Shannon Timmons. “Obviously to have a day where you out-hit and out-pitch your opponent and lose is disappointing. We will make adjustments to be better in run production and making plays in the field.”
Ava Simeone went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and delivered a single in the sixth inning to tie the game at three. Jay’Lyn Slater delivered a double, knocking in a Vikings run. Taylor Husbands went 3-for-3 while Kenna Justice went 1-for-3.
Laniya Lewis led the Ravens, going 1-for-3 with a double knocking in two RBIs. Senior Kayla Evans went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Journey Hopkins was 1-for-2.
“Our defense and base running made the biggest impact in the game,” said Tech head coach John Marvel. “Our defense played a very clean game. We not only made all the normal plays, but we also had a few web gems, and our catcher did a very nice job behind the plate the entire game. Our aggressive base running enabled us to grab a few extra runs and emotionally we were very resilient. That was something we talked about before the game, and the girls did a good job of putting it into practice.”
Tech pitchers Brynn Parker and Kylie Kruger combined for one strikeout, five walks, and 10 hits given up.
Cape will host Saint Mark’s Saturday, April 17, while the Ravens host Red Lion.
