Learning baking at an early Rehoboth school

After World War I, in the 1920s, Pierre S. DuPont, according to Delaware Public Archives materials, donated $2.9 million to upgrade Delaware’s public education facilities all over the state. That effort extended public education to many children of all ages who had never had the opportunity to learn the basics that allowed them to be productive citizens.

This photo shows a group of high school students at the Rehoboth school financed by DuPont.  They hold baskets of baked goods that were part of their home economics education.

The Delaware Public Archives Board of Education collection includes more than 3,000 photos of schools around the state, many of them financed by the DuPont initiative.
