Legacy Academy sets prospective student open house Feb. 7

January 31, 2024

Legacy Academy, the first classical Christian school in Sussex County, invites families to an open house for the 2024-25 school year at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7, at its campus in Harbeson. Families considering K-8 education for the upcoming school year are welcome to visit Legacy’s campus for a school tour, class immersion, meeting school faculty and families, and more.

On a recent cold and snowy day, Legacy Academy students braved the elements, and brought the warmth and energy inside to enjoy a day of scholé (restful learning). Derived from an ancient Greek term, Legacy utilizes scholé days to pause at the end of each academic quarter and bring the classroom to life. Students can thus make deep and lasting connections with their subjects. In January, Legacy traveled back in time to the Greco-Roman era.

To make the day authentic, students and staff donned togas, tested their strengths in a Greek Olympiad, feasted reclining at table, and re-enacted the epic battle that concluded the Trojan War. They were quizzed on their knowledge of ancient mythologies, Roman numerals and historical events. Most importantly, faculty discussed the importance of Jesus’s advent to earth during the Pax Romana; the good news of Jesus’s coming and his gospel message of salvation was able to travel in peace to the outer reaches of the earth.

Legacy Head of School Karen Barbrow said, “Legacy Academy believes scholé days are important opportunities to intentionally pause and look back at the past. History is transferred from the pages of our books into a rich experience allowing our students to see the significance of their studies. We also look around, identifying the ways in which these events shaped Western civilization and influence our present day. Our scholé days are some of the highlights of our academic year at Legacy.”

The only school of its kind in Southern Delaware, Legacy Academy is rooted in the classical tradition. Students are endowed with a robust, quality education that will take them far beyond Legacy’s doors and prepare them for life. Legacy Academy equips its students with time-tested tools of learning, and it also shapes their hearts and minds to mold them for their God-given calling.
