Lewes beach nourishment project is complete
Replenishment work on part of Lewes Beach is done.
The city and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said crews finished the dredging and beachfill operations Jan. 8.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District spokesman Steve Rochette said they placed 104,000 cubic yards of sand from Roosevelt Inlet to the area of Iowa and Missouri avenues.
As of Jan. 11, equipment remained out on the beach, as the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will continue nourishment south to New York Avenue.
Rochette said the project came in on budget at $4.9 million.
Rochette and the city said the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal maintenance dredging project is now scheduled to wrap up in the first week of February.
Crews experienced minor mechanical issues leading to a delay in the completion date. The canal is being dredged from Roosevelt Inlet to the Freeman Highway bridge.
