Lewes Bike to Work Day event hits local trails

Event promotes clean alternative to cars

The Lewes-Georgetown Trail was especially busy the morning of May 16, as dozens of people took part in the annual Lewes Bike to Work Day ride.

The group started at the trailhead near the Lewes Public Library, and rode a 45-minute loop through neighborhoods and back to city hall.

Mary Roth, chair of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, said the event helps promote the city’s extensive bike infrastructure.

“It’s another way to get out, even though you may or may not be biking to work. It’s a good way to see what’s going on in your community and get some exercise,” Roth said.

She said her committee’s goal is always safety first.

“One of the things we’re working on is, outside of trails, to make sure roads are as safe as possible so folks can make that direct connection to work,” she said.

Roth said her committee does not have statistics, but she knows employees from the hospital and the food service industry are among those who bike to work in the city.

The ride was organized by Lewes Cycle Sports.
