Lewes farmers market opens midweek edition for season

John and Diane O’Connor had bags of baked goods and produce as they left the Historic Lewes Farmers Market June 5.

It was opening day for the Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock. It was also the O’Connors’ first midweek visit.

“It’s great to support the farmers. There are fewer and fewer of them, unfortunately,” John O’Connor said.

The Wednesday market has about 11 vendors. Executive Director Ellie Shue said they are looking for more.

“We have a couple of new vendors and a couple that are new to this market that are at Saturday’s,” Shue said. Soon, the market should have Bennett’s blueberries. “That will definitely increase traffic,” Shue said.

Shue said the location of the market makes it more accessible for some customers because it is held in the parking lot, not grass.

Zach Dittmar of Dittmar Family Farms in Felton said he has been selling fresh produce at the Wednesday market for three or four years.

“It’s a little slow until Bennett’s shows up. Then it’s crazy,” Dittmar said.

The Wednesday edition of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m., through Sept. 4. It is located at the corner of Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway.

The Saturday market runs 8 a.m. to noon at George H.P. Smith Park, through Sept. 28.

For the first time, the market has banned dogs on both days. Certified service dogs are still allowed.
