Lewes goes German for the day

Chamber sponsors first Oktoberfest in historic downtown
October 4, 2012

On Sept. 21, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce's Historic Lewes Business Committee sponsored its first Oktoberfest as a Fun Friday event. Downtown merchants and restaurants offered German specials and a section of Market Street was closed to traffic for festivities including food sales, performances by the Happy Wanderers Oompah Band and dancing led by the Bavarian and Austrian Dance Company.

Betsy Reamer, the chamber's executive director, said the committee would decide on the future of Oktoberfest in Lewes, but all indicators point to a successful event. She said commemorative beer steins were sold out early, the crowd was large, all downtown restaurants participated and the chamber has received a lot of positive feedback.

"Having Dogfish Head as a sponsor was really helpful because they got the word out and they have a big following," she said.
