Lewes Historical Society craft fair set Oct. 3-4

September 30, 2020

Dozens of artists will showcase their skills at the Lewes Historical Society’s Annual Fall Craft Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4.

Local Delmarva artists and crafters will join others from surrounding states over the weekend to exhibit at the historical society’s main campus at 110 Shipcarpenter St. This annual show offers a range of unique creations including wood turning, carved decoys, hand-spun garments, driftwood art, ceramics and an assortment of jewelry designs in glass, copper, silver and more.

The Lewes Beekeeping Club will join fairgoers on campus Saturday only and display a live hive outside the colonial-era Rabbit’s Ferry House. Beekeepers and their bees will be demonstrating throughout the day. Attendees will learn how honey has served as both a science and a craft since colonial times. Honey, part of a fragile ecosystem, is known as an important ingredient, preservative and medication. Although honey will not be sold at the fair, due to restrictions, packets of pollinator-friendly flower seeds will be given away free while supplies last, to help support the local bee population.

The fall craft fair is sponsored by Schell Brothers. Admission is $5 at the gate and free for children under 12. Food and music will be available throughout the event. Proceeds from this event will benefit educational and preservation programs at the Lewes Historical Society.

All campus buildings will be closed during the fair, due to current health restrictions. However, with a fair ticket, patrons will have free access on Saturday only to the Lewes History Museum in the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center at 101 Adams Ave. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with the historic Cannonball House which currently houses the Breaking Britannia’s Grasp exhibition.

The Lewes Historical Society is committed to the safety of all visitors, volunteers and staff. Event capacity is limited to the maximum number of allowed individuals practicing social distancing as mandated by Delaware Health and Social Services. All participants are required to wear a face covering. Attendees must maintain social distance of six feet between individuals of different households. Organizers appreciate everyone’s patience and compliance for the health and comfort of fellow patrons.
