Lewes looks to 250th celebration

City forming committee to plan historic 2026 event
October 27, 2024

The City of Lewes wants to make the nation’s 250th birthday a special year-long celebration for the whole community.

Mayor and city council are forming a committee to plan events around the semiquincentennial in 2026. A steering committee could also be set up.

They brainstormed ideas for the panel at a roundtable Oct. 22.

“It’s important we ask everyone not just to expand Independence Day; it’s the whole year. It’s something we’re doing for our residents and our tourists,” said Councilwoman Amy Marasco.

Mayor and city council want representatives from all aspects of the community to serve on the panel: nonprofits, historical groups, businesses, faith, arts, Beebe Healthcare, the Lewes Fire Department and more.

“I think the Lewes Historical Society is key here,” said Deputy Mayor Khalil Saliba. “Their mission is telling the history of Lewes, which covers all these things.”

Mayor Andrew Williams said added events on the Fourth of July should not step on the city’s traditions, like the Doo-Dah Parade, boat parade and fireworks.

Some of the ideas that were suggested include dedicating the History Book Festival to the Revolutionary War era and a showcase of local cuisine.

Councilman Joe Elder suggested closing Second Street for special evening events throughout the year.

The panel also mentioned a contest to create an official Lewes 250 logo that could go on T-shirts and other items to sell.

The city is also planning to apply for various grants to help pay for the party.

Mayor and city council set a Dec. 9 deadline to appoint members to the committee.
