Lewes major all-stars fall to Naamans in state tournament

The state tournament run of the Lewes Major League All-Stars came to an end July 26, with a 4-3 loss to Naamans at MOT Little League. Lewes had defeated Naamans 10-0 just two days earlier.

The Lewes squad outhit Naamans 10- 4 in the July 26 game. Lewes broke the game open with three runs in the second inning when Grant Hershelman singled and was advanced around the bases with a ground out, an error and a wild pitch. After Cole Kastor walked and Andrew Mekulski singled, Lucca Tobias connected for a single to score Kastor and make it 3-0.

Mekulski went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

“I was just trying to make contact all night,” said Mekulski. ”I’m happy we made it this far. It was great just being here.”

Tobias went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lucca Fazio went 2-for-3. Ben Pease, Briggs Gannon, Finn Gannon, Hershelman and Jacoby Clark all added hits for Lewes.

Fazio started on the mound for Lewes, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out seven batters. Pease came in from the bullpen and struck out one.

“I tried to keep the balls down,” said Fazio. “I tried to keep throwing strikes and keep getting the strikes away. I’m just trying to do my best and trying to get far as I can with my pitches.”

Naamans scored one run in each of the second and third innings, and scored two in the sixth on a walk, a fielder’s choice, a single, an error, a sac fly and a single.

Nathan Cruser toed the rubber for Naamans, going four innings, giving up three runs and striking out four batters. Patrick Wilson came in from the bullpen in the fifth inning and finished the game with two strikeouts.

“I’m proud of the way we played all through the districts and this tournament,” said Lewes manager Jerry Windish. “It’s baseball. It was a tight game last night with MOT [Lewes lost 4-3]. I’m proud of these guys. Milton has a great team, and we had a great one too. The future is bright for Cape baseball, I can tell you that.”

Milton 8-10 eliminated 

The Milton 8-10 all-stars’ season came to an end July 25, with a 5-0 loss to MOT in the state tournament. Milton had defeated MOT 3-2 in the opening round July 23.
