Lewes railroad station progresses; trail detour removed

August 17, 2023

The Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail detour around Lewes Public Library has been removed. For weeks, construction of a replica 1900s Lewes Railroad Station has been underway, forcing a detour around the work site.

Project Chair Rich McGreal said the temporary fencing has been removed and placed around the landscape perimeter of the project, which allows cyclists and walkers to use that section of trail. Work is expected to be completed in October.

The railroad station project is a collaborative effort among Lewes library, Lewes in Bloom’s Art in Bloom, Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission, and Schell Brothers, the contractor.

The station complements the Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association’s railroad exhibit on a section of railroad tracks adjacent to the library, which includes a restored 1917 caboose.
