Lewes Senior Activity Center supports Code Purple shelters

February 24, 2025

The Lewes Senior Activity Center recently held a Take the Chill Off chili sale to benefit Code Purple emergency shelters. With funds raised, organizers purchased 100 warm coverings for the shelters from Blankets of Hope.

LSAC volunteer Dot Basile spearheaded the event and coordinated with Tim Twiford, executive chef and director of food services for Redner’s Markets. Twiford has been partnering with the Blankets of Hope organization for several years, providing delicious chili to sell for the benefit of various shelters and rescue missions. Likewise, Basile participated in similar Take the Chill Off sales for the past nine years when she lived in Pennsylvania.

Basile said, “When I came to Lewes and got involved with the senior activity center, I knew it was a perfect venue to continue the partnership with Chef Tim and Blankets of Hope to provide for the needs of our community.” LSAC volunteers Rod Hannahoe and Deb Hannahoe assisted with the chili sale which culminated in raising $680.

“All the proceeds go directly to Blankets of Hope, which was able to purchase the 100 blankets for our local shelter. With the freezing temperatures and snowy weather we have been experiencing, this event couldn’t have occurred at a better time,” said Basile.
