Lewes woman faces third DUI
A Lewes woman faces her third driving under the influence charge June 8 after refusing to stop for police near Love Creek.
A trooper on patrol spotted a Jeep Grand Cherokee at 12:56 a.m. heading westbound on Route 24 near the intersection of Camellia Drive without its headlights on, and tried to stop the Jeep, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police.
The driver, Laura Wilson, 52, turned left onto Camellia Drive, struck a guardrail and continued into the Love Creek neighborhood before stopping at Cornflower Lane.
Wilson got out of the car, but tried to get back in while the trooper was speaking to her, DeMalto said, and she resisted arrest when the trooper tried to handcuff her. She was taken into custody soon after.
The trooper smelled alcohol and detected signs of impairment with Wilson, DeMalto said, and a computer check showed that Wilson had two prior convictions for DUI. She was taken to Troop 7 and charged with felony third offense DUI, disregarding a police officer signal, resisting arrest and traffic violations. Wilson was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $6,307 secured bond.
