Lightship Overfalls sets volunteer recruitment event April 11

March 16, 2024

The Overfalls Foundation needs energetic volunteers to help with all that goes into keeping a small, all-volunteer nonprofit afloat. No prior knowledge of ships is necessary.

The foundation’s mission is to preserve and manage the Lightship Overfalls, the big red ship docked along the canal in Lewes, and to educate people about the lightship service and the local community’s maritime history. Volunteers are needed to help with tours, the welcome center and museum store, ship maintenance, communication, outreach, fundraising, event planning and advertising.

To introduce potential volunteers to the Overfalls Foundation facilities and these volunteer opportunities, an information session is set for 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 11, at the Virden Center, 1155 College Drive, Lewes. A light dinner will be served. To attend, RSVP to Ted Hack at volunteering@overfalls.org.

The Overfalls was first launched in 1938. The ship served continuously as a floating lighthouse until 1972, when it was decommissioned by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard donated the vessel to Lewes in 1973, where it later became a floating museum and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011. For more information, go to overfalls.org.
