Linda Miller Whitton, secretary, community volunteer
Linda Miller Whitton, 81, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Alexandria, Va., passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. Known to most as Aunt Linda, she was predeceased by her husband, Monroe “Chip” Whitton; her father, Frank Miller Jr.; her stepfather, Dr. Marshall J. Waple Jr.; her mother, Nancy Waple; her sister, Anne Waple DeNitto; and her brother, Braxton Waple. She is survived by her brothers, Marshal J. Waple III of Estes Park, Colo., Joseph V. Waple of Richmond, Va., and James R. Waple of Rehoboth Beach; her nephews, Peter A. DeNitto of Falls Church, Va., Stephen Whitton of New York, Sam Munson of New York, Christopher DeNitto of Sarasota, Fla., Oliver Waple and Nathaniel Waple of Richmond, Va., Charlie and Joshua Fingerman of Burke, Va.; and her nieces, Sarah Muson of New York, Julia Munson of New York, Carolyn Fingerman, Kelly Whitton, Cecilia Waple, Caroline Waple, Rosemary Waple of Rehoboth Beach, and Charlie DeNitto of Falls Church.
Linda was born in Baltimore, Md., and raised in Alexandria, Va., where she graduated from Hammond High School. After spending time at the University of South Florida, she worked as a secretary in Alexandria, where she met her husband, Chip.
She eventually became the executive secretary for the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority for 22 years. During that time, she also served as the recording secretary for the Alexandria City Council.
In addition to her professional work, she served for 20 years as the chairwoman of the Alexandria Sister Cities committee, helping to foster great ties with Dundee, Scotland. She was on the honorary board of alumni for Sister Cities International. She volunteered with the Alexandria City Y and the Campagna Center, acting as the treasurer for the Alexandria Scottish Walk. During two separate visits to Dundee, in her official capacities, she was presented to and dined with Queen Elizabeth II, as well as presented to the Queen Mother. She retained close ties to her counterparts from Dundee well after her retirement, including hosting almost two dozen guided tours of Scotland during her lifetime.
With her family, she volunteered with the Little Theatre of Alexandria, as a stage manager as well as costume sewing and design. Gadsby's Tavern also saw her work behind the scenes for their “Christmas Carol” shows.
She loved daffodils and gardening, and she served on the board of directors for the Washington Daffodil Society, as well as handling the services for the Ways and Means committee.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Interment will occur at a later date at the Presbyterian Cemetery and Columbarium in Alexandria, Va.
