Little library established at Friendship Baptist Church in Lewes

June 21, 2024

The Lillie Paterson Association, a 501(c)3 charity established by Alicia Jones and Owen Cheevers, recently opened a little library at Friendship Baptist Church, 500 West Fourth St., Lewes.

Providing educational resources for students in grades K-12, books and materials will focus on diversity, inclusion, equity and local history.

With the vision to develop and foster higher learning, Jones and Cheevers hope the library will provide opportunities for readers to interact and develop relationships with one another. The artwork adorning the library was created and designed by Anna Nauman, a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School.

Lillie Paterson was an African American librarian who served schools and colleges in the Baltimore area. The author of 17 books, Paterson received the Coretta Scott King Book Award in 1970 for “Martin Luther King Jr.: Man of Peace (Americans All).”
