The Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association board of directors was deeply saddened at the recent passing of Ted Becker, former City of Lewes mayor and a great friend of LJRBA. Ted was among the visionaries who saw an opportunity to ensure that the history of Lewes railroads would not be lost to time. While in the mayor’s office, he supported the establishment of the railroad display at Lewes Junction and the preservation of the hand-cranked railroad bridge now along the rail-to-trail at the end of American Legion Road. This support took the obvious form of his being among those in city government who were willing to vote yes rather than no, but he also was always open to discussion of options and ideas, and ably married aspirations to reality. At the end of the day, he loved Lewes, and advanced projects and plans that would protect and augment the city’s historic character, beauty and welcoming ambiance.
Ted had a generosity of spirit that came through in all his actions, large or small, public or private. Many of us knew him as a public official, fellow volunteer, neighbor and/or friend. In every role, Ted was kind, helpful, funny, intelligent and always a gentleman.
We will miss him.
