Lloyd Charles Simmons, retired forester
Lloyd Charles Simmons, 88, passed away peacefully at home Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, in Chance, Md., surrounded by his loving family after a recent decline in health. Lloyd’s journey through life was marked by his dedication to his family and friends, and his love for the great outdoors.
Lloyd was born and raised in Plymouth, Pa., to Raymond and Emma Simmons. He proudly served his nation as a radio operator in the Air Force during the mid-1950s. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at North Carolina State University, where he earned a degree in forestry.
For 37 years, Lloyd worked as a forester in California, Virginia, and Delaware. His career was not just a job but a calling, as he loved being outdoors and took every opportunity to educate others about the importance of conservation and nature. He retired as the manager of Redden State Forest in Georgetown in 1998.
Upon retirement, Lloyd moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a place that allowed him to go fishing and crabbing whenever he wanted. He also enjoyed the peaceful views of the Chesapeake Bay.
Family was an important part of Lloyd’s life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of over 60 years, Sally Simmons. He was a great dad to his three daughters, Lisa Simmons (Mary Ann), Kathy Lingo (Jay) and Kim Willoughby (Rex). Lloyd also cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Jordan Lingo (Lexi), Connor Lingo (Rachel) and Sara Lingo Koehler (Kieran).
He will also be greatly missed by his brother, Raymond Simmons; and sister, Janice Williams, and their families.
Lloyd's interests reflected his deep connection to the world around him. He was an avid gardener, beekeeper, hunter, and fisherman. His gentle and helpful nature was known to all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. Lloyd's kindness extended beyond his hobbies, as he was always ready to lend a hand to whoever needed it.
In lieu of flowers, planting trees or giving donations to a favorite park or nature preserve in his name would be a lovely tribute to Lloyd.
