Local woman named Red Hat Society ambassador

Royal Queen Mother BJ Young of Lewes has been named as one of the Red Hat Society’s ambassadors. The Red Hat Society is a international society based in Fullerton, Calif., and founded by Sue Ellen Cooper.

She is currently the only ambassador for the state of Delaware to be selected. The role of the ambassador is to represent the Red Hat Society in local areas for special projects, to promote the society philosophy of fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness, to encourage women in their involvement through membership and to provide feedback from chapter members to society hatquarters to be used for current and future growth.

“The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. They believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together.

“Underneath the frivolity, Red Hat members share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes them next,” said Sue Ellen Cooper, queen mother.

The Red Hat Society celebrates life through sisterhood. Many Red Hatters gather in local chapters small and large to have fun and support one another, though some choose to remain individual members and participate in activities as their schedule allows. Activities include sharing meals, playing games, going to shows, traveling on excursions and to society conventions, and other fun forms of socializing.
