A large field of 444 runners and walkers took part in the 19th annual Tim Kennard 10-Miler, 5K and non-competitive 5K walk. A large group from the beach supported this popular event, which was great to see.
Jonathan Murphy, 34, of Salisbury, Md., took the overall male title in 17:05 to lead the 5K finishers, while 45-year-old Sherry Stick of Sykesville, Md., took the female title in 19:38. The Harrington Harrier, Matt Sparacino, 46, won the male masters title in 18:16, while the dancing 61-year-old, Laura St. Martin, won the female masters race in 25:33. The male grand masters trophy went to Ed Strobach, 67, of Salisbury in 21:31, while Leigh Peck, 66, of Lutherville, Md., won the female grand masters division in 27:58.
Locals grabbing a top-three spot in respective 5K age groups include Steven Eshelman of Millsboro in 19:56 to win the 30-34 age group and Mike Sewell of Lewes winning the 50-54 age group in 20:48. JR Ward of Millsboro ran 23:53 to grab second in the 50-54 age group. Shaun Serfass of Selbyville won the 65-69 age group in 26:27, while Donald Cowie of Dewey Beach was second in 27:11. Joy Biser of Millsboro won the 65-69 group in 28:04. Rick Boyle of Frankford ran 21:49 to win the 70-74 category, while Jack Edwards of Milton was second in 37:38. Jim Rhatigan of Millsboro won the 75-plus age group in 29:17, while Jules Woodall of Lewes was second in 36:36.
In 10-miler action, Salisbury elite Tyler Muse, 30, ran away with the male championship in 52:24, winning by just over 40 seconds. Maria Miller, 42, of Tyaskin, Md., won the female championship in 1:11:59, crossing the line just five seconds before the runner-up. Mike Synowiec, 50, of Salisbury won the male masters race in 1:06:27, while well-known Denise Knickman, 55, of Baltimore, Md., ran 1:16:12 to win the female masters title. Bobby Hutton of Rehoboth Beach took a liking to being 60 years old as he captured the male grand masters title in 1:11:39, while Debra Isser, 69, of Milton won the female grand masters race in 1:22:20, which is less than a minute off the state age-group record of 1:21:23.
Locals grabbing a top-three spot in their age group for the 10-miler include 17-year-old Ally Miller of Milton in 1:46:36 finishing third in the 19-and-under age group, while Zachary McCarthy, 36, of Frankford ran 1:13:47 to win the 35-39 age group. Kimberly McCarthy, 37, of Frankford ran 1:38:31 to take second in the 35-39 age group, while Martin Rodriguez, 42, of Selbyville ran 1:12:39 to finish second in the 40-44 age group. Sue Bonk, 43, of Rehoboth Beach ran 1:28:34 to finish second in the 40-44 age group. Ed Fung, 54, of Rehoboth Beach took third in the 50-54 age group in 1:22:31, while Jen Ward, 51, of Millsboro placed third in the 50-54 age group in 1:33:19. Ken Dorey, 55, of Frankford was third in the 55-59 age group in 1:38:29, and Jackie Quigley, 56, of Georgetown took third in the 55-59 age group in 1:24:31. Tim Young, 63, of Rehoboth Beach ran 1:18:53 to win the 60-64 age group, while Izzy Colon, 67, of Milton won the 65-69 age group in 1:16:21.
“The 19th annual Tim Kennard River Run was a smashing success,” said longtime race organizer Harlan Eagle. “We so appreciate the support of runners and sponsors throughout Delmarva and beyond, the kindness of Salisbury Bible Fellowship for hosting the event and the Seashore Striders for outstanding race management. We hope you can all join us next March 2 for our exciting 20th annual race.”
Finish line
Former Seashore Striders sprinter Tykee Perry has recently accepted a promotion to sergeant first class/E-7 in the U.S. Army. “It’s been one helluva ride, for sure,” said Tykee. “The love and support getting here has been unmatched. Looking forward to all that is to come.”
A large group of 93 boys is on the roster for the Cape boys’ track & field team. Ellis Gaulden will be the head coach, assisted by Matt Lindell, Jay Maull, John Keevan and George Pepper. Peter Klotz is listed as the volunteer assistant coach. On the girls’ side, 89 are on the roster for head coach Jen Cawthern. Cawthern will be assisted by Martin Rodriguez, Amanda Evans, Rob Perciful and Jamie Loucks. The Vikings will open at the Seahawk Invitational in Maryland at South River High School Sunday, March 24.
Robbin Wells, a Seashore Striders volunteer, worked the preregistration table from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the Tim Kennard 10-Miler and then pushed her buddy for 10 miles as a part of the dynamic Team 360 program. It does not get much better than Robbin Wells.
