Long-lost Fort Miles barracks at The Point

September 24, 2024

Those who frequent Cape Henlopen State Park are familiar with the barracks at Fort Miles on the way to Herring Point. Some might be surprised to know there were also barracks along the road leading to The Point. This image was recently shared on the Facebook page of Fort Miles Museum and Historic Area. It shows green and yellow barracks sitting in the shadow of Tower 9, which is used by the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware for ship control radar and communications for Delaware Bay commercial shipping. According to the post, parts of Fort Miles became a recreation area for the Air Force in the 1950s. The recreation area used older World War II-era barracks.
