Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club donates $3,000 to Delaware Burn Camp

September 24, 2014

As part of its mission to serve the local community, the Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club presented a $3,000 donation Aug. 14 to President Joanne Hutchison of Delaware Burn Camp during the weeklong camp held at Camp Barnes.

Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club member and camp Vice President John Lattomus was instrumental in establishing the camp five years ago to serve youth who have suffered serious burn injuries, and the Rotary organization has been supporting the club every year as a result.

To raise funds, Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club sponsors an annual golf tournament, with a major portion of the proceeds earmarked for the Burn Camp. This year’s $3,000 donation marks a $500 increase from the donation made in 2013. In addition to the donation, Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club members volunteer each year for one day of camp to assist with camp activities. This year the group assisted with archery safety and skill development.

“This year we had 10 children at camp, eight males and two females. All were returning campers, and the youngest was 7 years old with the oldest turning 16 while we were at camp,” said Hutchison. “Without generous donations and volunteer efforts from organizations like Rotary, our costs per camper this year would have been between $900 and $1,200. Rotary’s continued support is a great help to these wonderful children.”

“We are delighted to be able to help such a wonderful organization,” stated current Long Neck Rotary President Mike Hall. “Helping youth is one of the major thrusts of Rotary, and having this camp in our own region gives us the opportunity to provide hands-on help as well as financial support.”

The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club meets weekly at 7:30 a.m., Tuesdays for breakfast at the Ocean Grill II on Long Neck Road. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome.
