The Love Creek Girls on the Run club collected 60 blankets to donate to Cape Region families and animal shelters.
Coach and third-grader teacher Rebecca Vansant said every season the club completes a community service project.
“This year, the girls noticed that some may be cold in the decreasing temperatures,” Vansant said. “They decided to collect new and used blankets to keep people and animals in Sussex County warm and comfortable.”
To promote the four-week blanket drive, students made posters and created a video for morning announcements.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based youth-development program for girls in third through eighth grade.
“The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness,” Vansant said.
“We teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games,” she said. “The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event.”
The club, also coached by Amanda Hale and Sherri Klemkowski, finished its season by running a 5K Nov. 17 at Dover International Speedway.
