Lower Sussex NAACP honors unsung heroes

October 1, 2018

The Lower Sussex NAACP Chapter 2029 held its annual Freedom Fund Banquet Sept. 22 at Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown. The event featured music, dance, dinner, a keynote address, and an awards ceremony honoring unsung community activists. The 2018 theme was Stand Firm on the Power of Justice.

Honorees included Doris Biles, Dannora Elzey, Myra Sampson and Brooks Parker. Each was credited with making a powerful impact in the community through service and activism. The Rev. Dr. John Moore Sr., president and CEO of Total Increase Ministries, delivered a stirring keynote address, underscoring glaring racial disparities in the areas of education, health and criminal justice.

The NAACP holds the banquet each year to raise funds for social justice initiatives and campaigns designed to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons, and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

Founded in 1909 by a multiracial group of citizens, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.
