Lula Lena Brown, Cracker Barrel hostess

Lula Lena Brown, 73, passed away at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes.

Lula is predeceased by her father, Thomas W. Bennett and her mother, Jodie C. Taylor Bennett; two half brothers, William J Cleek, Edward L Cleek; two brothers, Thomas F. Bennett and Charles “Pookie” Bennett; and one half sister, Ruth A. Cleek.

Lula is lovingly remembered by her sons, J. Michael Brown and F. Lee Brown (wife Iris Brown), of Lewes, and son Thomas R. Brown of Cambridge Mass.; and daughter Elizabeth J Short of Millsboro. Lula has five grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Thomas Brown and Seth Brown all of Tennessee, and Hunter Brown and Cameron Brown of Lewes. Lula has four great-grandsons, Matthew Jr. Brown, Caden Brown, Lucus Brown and Finnley Brown, all of Tennessee. Lula is also loved by three nieces, Christine Peek and Cathy Cleek of Augusta Ga., and Teresa Gandy of Birmingham Ala.; and one nephew, Pat Bennett of Tullahoma, Tenn.

Lula was born in Detroit Mich. in 1942. She graduated Tullahoma High School, class 1961. She went on to Joseph’s School of Hair Design in Knoxville, Tenn. Lula enjoyed her profession of cosmetology for over 33 years. She also enjoyed platform competitions, as well as platform instructing. She was a member of Tennessee State Hairdressers Association and the National Hairdressers Association for many years. After retiring from her profession, she embarked on a new career as a hostess at Cracker Barrel in Rehoboth Beach for the past 14 years in which she became a Par 4 Hostess. Lula was Employee of Month many times, as well as Employee of the Year.

Lula enjoyed performing in theatre and playhouse in Tullahoma. She was also an avid sports fan and loved her Tennessee Vols!

The service of remembrance will be held Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m., at Conley’s Chapel, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes,  with Pastor Michael Hurley officiating. An autumn soiree will be held celebrating her life immediately following service. (Direction to soiree will be available at the church service.)
