MacElrevey wins 1,500-meter outdoor championship

June 1, 2018

Cape graduate and Merchant Marine Academy senior Austin MacElrevey captured the ECAC Outdoor Championship 1,500-meter title for Division III last week at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. MacElrevey ran a personal best of 3:59.08 to control the final lap and split 60 seconds in the final 400 meters to hold off PSU-Behrend sophomore Chris Drozynski. MacElrevey also ran 15:31 in the 5,000 meters in the same meet to finish second.

This victory combined with his second-place finish in the 5,000 means MacElrevey finished the ECAC meet with a team-best 18 points. MacElrevey also won the conference meet back in the fall to add to his unforgettable senior year.

National top 100

The top 100 middle school performances in each event came out this week in Milesplit. Beacon’s Noelle Sabbagh was 54th in the triple jump with a 32-foot-8-inch effort, while Tia Jarvis was 39th with her 33-foot-1-inch try. Jarvis is also listed in the long jump at 16-feet-8-inches, good for 46th. Haley Archambault is just inside the top 100 with her 82-foot discus throw. Reagan Ciabattoni of Mariner is sixth nationally in the triple jump at 35-foot jump.

Masser 5-Miler

The Masser 5-Miler was held May 27, and Mother Nature greeted my race team with pelting rain for hours before the event during a crucial setup time. When 7:30 a.m. came, the crew and I were soaked, but the rain was slowing and the gun started a field of 250 dedicated supporters of Dr. Lee Masser.

The field was a good one, with ultra specialist and world-known racer Mike Wardian of Bristow, Va., lined up with Austin Cave of Delmar, Martin Rodriguez of Selbyville and Jeff Young of Wayne, Pa.

Cave took the race out and ran away from Wardian and the rest of the field, hitting the line in 26:51, while Wardian was timed in 27:54. Young was third in 29:03, while Rodriguez grabbed fourth in 29:27.

Kelly Tingle of Delmar ran 34:59 for the overall women’s win, while Olivia Montini, 13, ran 36:58 for second. Susan Dunn got the job done in third with a 37:03 to take the masters, while Mike Sewell won the male masters in 32:21.

Justin’s Beach House 5K

More than 1,000 runners and walkers showed up for the annual Justin’s Beach House 5K May 26 in Bethany. The course circled the lively beach town before a boardwalk finish brought the field to the bandstand. As we were setting up the finish area, several people asked us about the charity and then went up to register with no hesitation. The town is very supportive of these large running events.

Young Noah McFoy, 17, of Newark won the 5K with a 17:34, while Greg Skipper of Baltimore ran 17:56 for second. Erin Hall from Tennessee ran 19:17 for the women’s win, while Merrecia James of Bethany was second in 19:52.
