Manuel 'Manny' Farinas, Purple Heart recipient
Manuel “Manny” Farinas, 67, of Lewes, formerly of Clifton, N.J., passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was born March 25, 1946, in Santiago, Cuba, son of the late Orlando Farinas and Aurelia (Martin) Farinas, who survives.
Manny was a 1964 graduate of East Side High School in Newark, N.J. After graduating he joined the Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War. Manny was proud of his military service, and received two Purple Hearts while serving. He then enjoyed a lifelong career in the area of construction as a foreman. Manny worked with a number of companies through the years, most recently with Raimundo & Sons and Structure Tone. He was a loyal member of Local 325 and later with Local 1153.
In 2009 Manny followed his desire for a slower, quieter life, retiring to Sussex County. He enjoyed playing Texas Hold ‘Em and three card poker. He would also play card bingo at American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, where he had become a member. He loved the challenge of Sudoku. Manny also enjoyed time spent on the beach with his loving wife, Susan. One of Manny’s proudest moments was in December of 2011 when he became a U.S. citizen.
Manny was a man with a magnetic personality; everyone he met would soon have their own “Manny” story to tell. His great sense of humor, vibrant personality, and infectious laugh will be the legacy Manny leaves for those he loved. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Farinas is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Susan (Sciorra) Farinas; his two sons: Erik Farinas of Millsboro and Darren Farinas of Jersey City, N.J.; his daughter, Laura Carillo and her husband Joseph of Trumbull, Conn.; his three grandchildren: David, Leah and Alex Carillo; his brother, Danny Farinas and wife Debra of Parkland, Fla.; and many dear friends who he considered to be family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Friends may also call at the funeral home Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
