March 17 discussion to feature FDR secret home movies
The Lewes Public Library discussion series, Fireside Chats: Exploring the Roosevelt Legacy, will welcome host Paul Sparrow, former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, at 5 p.m., Sunday, March 17, in the library’s fireplace area, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.
Sparrow will share a fascinating collection of films made by President Franklin Roosevelt’s executive assistant and confidante, Missy LeHand.
LeHand’s home movies were hidden from public view for many decades until her family donated them to the FDR Library in 2017, with Sparrow playing an integral role in making the films available to the public. The candid scenes span from 1932 through 1941 and reveal a little-known private side of the Roosevelts – fun-loving, adventurous and carefree.
Historical figures, including European royalty and political advisors, make appearances, while other scenes show FDR in unguarded moments at a polio rehabilitation center, letting down his guard and relaxing with other polio survivors.
Seating is limited, and registration is required. To register for either online or in-person attendance, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.
