Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing leads babysitting courses

August 14, 2023

The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing held babysitter training classes in June and July.

Participants gained skills and confidence to care for infants and children safely and responsibly through hands-on activities and lively discussions. All classes were open to the community and accommodated 50 enthusiastic teens from 12 to 15 years old.

Highlights from the course include lessons on how to run a successful babysitting business, normal growth and development of a child from infant to 10 years of age, basics of first aid including usage of an Epi-Pen, and hands-on training in infant and child CPR.

All classes emphasized how to ensure safety for both the babysitter and the children in the home. The course is designed for community outreach, health education and promoting future interest in the healthcare field. Future courses will be held in summer 2024.

The babysitting course was led by Danielle Blankenship, EdD, MSN, RNC-MNN, with assistance from Makenzie Helsel, MSN, RN; Emily Petito, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, CNE; Jennifer Wingate, MSN, RN; Kathryn Zahner, MSN, RN; and several senior nursing students.
