January 31, 2024

The Mariner Middle School boys’ basketball team garnered district bragging rights for 2024 as they defeated Beacon 31-27 Jan. 29 at Cape Henlopen High School.

It was nip and tuck for three periods as the two teams traded baskets until late in the fourth quarter. Mariner pulled away thanks to Asher Woods’ six points during a 15-6 run.

Trizton Willey paced Mariner with seven points. Woods tallied six. Harlem Johnson, Ben Hill and Joseph Ruark knocked down five points, while Christopher Prince scored three.

Mikiah Jackson led Beacon with nine points. Grady Trivits, Nathan Re, Kihara Ngido and AJ Crenshaw each scored four. Tyson Johnson scored a basket.

“We feel great as a team to come away with this victory,” said Willey. “I feel that both teams will become great teammates next year.“

“It’s my last Beacon versus Mariner game,” said Re. “It was pretty special, and it’s nice that we will be playing together next year. I think we’ll be pretty good teammates.”
