Marla Anne Marfizo, devout Catholic

Marla Anne Marfizo, 76, of Millsboro, formerly of Ellicott City, Md., passed away peacefully with her loving husband by her side Monday, April 24, 2023.  

She was born on Oct. 11, 1946, in Newburyport, Mass., daughter of the late Ralph E. and Mary McGarrell (née Anderson). Marla was a graduate of Andover High School and the Marinello Beauty School.   

Marla managed several beauty shops and was a talented makeup artist, and won first place several years ago at a New York City makeup convention. After a few years of retirement, she went to work as a cook for the Franciscan Friars of St. Anthony in Ellicott City, Md.    

She became a prolific reader of Christian books, and her Catholic faith became very important to her. Marla took her first vows as a lay Carmelite nun. After only five months of retirement to Delaware, her health began to deteriorate due to her diabetes.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert McGarrell. She is remembered as a devoted wife of 54 years to Richard J. Marfizo, and mother to Heather Lynn Marfizo. She is also survived by three brothers, Ralph McGarrell (Rose), Richard McGarrell (Fern) and Charles McGarrell (Stephanie); and two sisters, Mary Margaret Skipper (Bill) and Anne Catherine Carney (Bryan).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 13, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 2201 Graham Ave. Windber, Pa., followed by interment at the church cemetery.
