Marsh Island Golf Club abruptly shuttered its doors effective Jan. 31, leaving Cape Region golfers in a state of disappointment and dismay.
The course on Camp Arrowhead Road opened in 1999. It offered a short but fun layout that appealed to thousands of Cape Region residents and visitors during its 17 years in operation.
A Jan. 28 letter posted on the clubhouse doors said the following:
“We would like to inform you that Marsh Island will be closing Jan. 31, 2017. All memberships will be fully refunded and checks will be mailed shortly after that date to the address listed on the application. We would like to thank everyone for your past business and support. We are very thankful and grateful in having you as our customer.”
On Feb. 1, Andrew Schneider of Marsh Island Golf Club said in a message, “The owner decided to close the course Jan. 31 in order to make immediate and necessary improvements to the property. Since these improvements must be completed in a timely manner, closing the course and prepping the land in the off-season was the most appropriate action to take.”
Kevin McTigue, a Marsh Island member from Angola By the Bay, said, “I’m in shock right now. I’m going to miss it. We had a lot of fun there.”
McTigue was part of a Wednesday morning gang that played the course year-round. The annual membership dues were $900. When he talked to the course Jan. 30, McTigue was reassured that the refund would be forthcoming.
Two other local membership options remain in the Cape Region, at similar price points.
The American Classic Golf Club, off Postal Lane in Midway, charged $989 for its 2016 season. The Rookery’s unlimited playing privileges are available for $1,700 for an individual membership, with an afternoon membership costing $975 to play either the North or South courses.
